How to Use the Outline in Google Docs
Removing Headings from the Document Outline
If you no longer want a heading to appear in the outline but don’t want to change its formatting or remove it from the document, simply click the “X” next to the heading in the outline. The heading will stay in your document but won’t appear in the outline. To add it back, right-click the text in the document and select Add to Document Outline.
Using the Document Outline for Navigation
The Document Outline isn’t just for organizing—it’s interactive. Clicking a heading in the outline will take you directly to that section in your document, which is especially helpful for long reports or documents. Additionally, the heading under your cursor will appear in blue in the outline, helping you track your position within the document.
Closing or Hiding the Document Outline
If you prefer a distraction-free writing space or only need the outline occasionally, you can hide or close it.
- To close the outline, uncheck View > Show Document Outline.
- To temporarily hide it, click the arrow at the top-left of the outline. A small icon will appear in its place. Clicking the icon will bring the outline back.
For anyone who works with lengthy documents like reports, essays, or books, the Document Outline in Google Docs provides an excellent way to organize and quickly navigate your content.
