GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 online services were recently taken down by a DDoS attack, apparently in retaliation for Rockstar’s new anti-cheat measures.
Last week, Rockstar introduced BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA Online to improve its fair play tools. Given the rampant cheating in GTA Online, many felt the move was long overdue, but the additional restrictions were not good news for modders or players with older or less powerful hardware. It seems as if someone has decided to retaliate.
According to CyberInsider, the attacks began last weekend, causing connectivity issues for GTA Online and Red Dead Online on all platforms. CyberInsider reported that the group behind the attacks protested the launch of BattlEye, citing a Twitter user who said gamers could “expect more DDoS attacks in the coming days.” However, these additional attacks do not appear to have occurred yet. Unfortunately, Rockstar is no stranger to such online threats. The company has had issues with “GTA Online” before but has also faced attacks related to “GTA 6.” After a major leak of “GTA 6” in September 2022, Rockstar had to deal with the spread of a large amount of information from the early stages of the game’s development. Although the situation seems to have improved with the release of the official trailer footage of “GTA 6,” the company is probably still very wary of possible incidents in the future.
