How to install Windows Server 2022 RDS CALs

1. On your Remote Desktop license server, open RD Licensing Manager. Activate the license server first if you haven’t yet.
2. Right-click the server, choose Install Licenses, and follow the wizard, entering the key from your order email.
3. In your Remote Desktop deployment, set the licensing mode to Per User.

RDS CALs work with Remote Desktop Session Host servers of the same version or earlier, so Windows Server 2022 RDS CALs also cover Windows Server 2019 and 2016.

Do users also need Windows Server CALs?

Yes. Under Microsoft’s licensing, RDS CALs are needed in addition to a Windows Server client access license for each user or device.
