How to Install or Upgrade Windows with a Product Key

Scenario 1: Upgrading from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

If your PC is running the latest version of Windows 10 and you’ve purchased Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, upgrading is as easy as entering your product key.

From the desktop, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
Select Change product key and input your Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro for Workstations product key.
If the key is valid, you’ll be prompted to confirm the edition upgrade, and Windows will complete the process automatically.

Scenario 2: Upgrading from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

To upgrade, ensure your PC is running the latest version of Windows 10.

From the desktop, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
Select Change product key and enter your Windows 10 Pro for Workstations product key.
If the key is valid, you’ll be prompted to confirm the upgrade, and Windows will automatically complete the edition change for you.

Scenario 3: Installing Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro on a PC Without an Operating System

To install Windows 10 Home or Pro on a PC without an existing operating system, you’ll need to create bootable media—such as a USB drive or DVD—using another computer.

Download and install the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft website.
Insert the bootable media into your PC and power it on.
When prompted, enter your Windows 10 product key. The setup process will automatically select the correct edition based on the key you provide.
Note: If your PC originally came with Windows 10, the setup may recognize it automatically.

Scenario 4: Installing Windows 10 Pro for Workstations on a PC Without an Operating System

To install Windows 10 Pro for Workstations on a PC with no operating system, you’ll first need to create bootable media, such as a USB drive or DVD, using another computer.

Download and install the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s download page.
Turn on your PC and insert the bootable media.
When prompted, select I don’t have a product key.
Choose Windows 10 Pro as the edition to install.
After setup is complete, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
Select Change product key to enter your Windows 10 Pro for Workstations product key.

Scenario 5: Installing Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro for Workstations on a PC Running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

To upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, you’ll first need to upgrade to Windows 10.

Visit the software download page on Microsoft.com and follow the instructions under Using the tool to upgrade this PC to Windows 10.
Once the upgrade to Windows 10 is complete, follow the steps in Scenario 1 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro for Workstations.
