How to Flip or Mirror Text in Microsoft Word

Word 2021 - GGKEYS

If you’re designing something creative in Microsoft Word, like a sign, flyer, or announcement, flipping or mirroring text can add a unique touch. For example, you might want text to appear upside down or as a reflection.

Microsoft Word doesn’t let you directly flip or mirror regular text, but you can achieve this effect using text boxes. This method also allows you to position the text exactly where you want it, giving you more control over the design.

How to Add a Text Box in Word

  1. Open Your Document:
Start by opening the Word document where you want to add the flipped or mirrored text.
  2. Insert a Text Box:
    • Go to the Insert tab at the top of the screen.
    • Choose Text Box, then pick the style you want.
    • Click on the page where you want the text box to appear.

Once the text box is in place, you can type your text inside and use formatting tools to flip or mirror it. This approach gives you flexibility for creative designs!

Open the Text Box dropdown menu in the Text section of the ribbon, and select “Draw Text Box.”

You’ll also see pre-made text box options in the menu. If you’d like a text box with built-in formatting or color, choose one of these. It will instantly appear in your document, ready for customization.

Step 1

To draw the text box, click and drag to the size you want when your cursor changes to a crosshair symbol. You can also resize it after you draw it by dragging a corner or edge.

Step 2

How to Mirror Text in Word

After entering the text you want to mirror in the text box, right-click on the text box and select “Format Shape” from the menu.

Step 3

When the sidebar opens, select “Text Options” at the top and then open the Text Effects.

Step 4

Select the text inside the box and then expand the Reflection section in the sidebar.

Step 5

Then, use the Transparency, Size, Blur, and Distance settings to mirror the text exactly as you want.

Step 6

When you’re done, close the sidebar by clicking the X in the top-right corner.

If needed, you can also customize the text box to better suit your design. Select the text box, go to the Shape Format tab, and use the tools in the ribbon to:

  • Remove or adjust the border,
  • Apply a style,
  • Align the text inside the box.

These options let you fine-tune the text box’s appearance to match your preferences.

How to Flip Text in Word

To flip text in your Word document, start by adding a text box. Once the text box is in place, select it to reveal the rotation handle (a circular arrow at the top).
