A scatter plot, also known as a scatter chart or XY chart, visually shows the relationship between two sets of data. It helps identify trends, correlations, and patterns between the data points. Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating and formatting a scatter plot in Excel.

1. Create a Scatter Plot

Step 1: Highlight the Data

  • Open your Excel spreadsheet containing the data sets.
  • Highlight the data you want to plot. Ensure your data is organized with one data set in the first column (X-axis values) and the other in the second column (Y-axis values).

Step 2: Insert the Scatter Plot

  1. Go to the Insert tab on the ribbon.
  2. In the Charts group, click the Insert Scatter (X, Y) or Bubble Chart button.
  3. From the drop-down menu, choose the desired scatter plot style:
    • Simple Scatter
    • Scatter with Smooth Lines
    • Scatter with Straight Lines
    • Scatter with Markers
  4. The scatter plot will appear in your worksheet. The X-axis will display the data from the first column, and the Y-axis will display the data from the second column.

2. Format Your Scatter Plot

You can customize the design and appearance of the scatter plot to match your style or requirements.

Step 1: Access Chart Design and Format Options

  • Click on the scatter plot to select it.
  • Two additional tabs will appear in the ribbon: Chart Design and Format.

Step 2: Customize the Chart Design

  1. Change the Chart Layout and Style:
    • Go to the Chart Design tab.
    • Use the Chart Layouts group to switch between predefined layouts.
    • In the Chart Styles group, select a predefined style to quickly apply a new look to your chart.
  2. Switch Data Rows and Columns:
    • If your data points are not appearing as intended, use the Switch Row/Column option in the Chart Design tab to adjust the data orientation.
  3. Change the Chart Type:
    • If you selected the wrong scatter plot type, click Change Chart Type in the Chart Design tab and pick a new style.

Step 3: Adjust Chart Formatting

  1. Change the Fill and Outline:
    • Go to the Format tab.
    • Use the Shape Fill and Shape Outline options to adjust the chart’s colors and borders.
  2. Apply Special Effects:
    • Click Shape Effects in the Shape Styles group on the Format tab.
    • Hover over effects like Glow, Shadow, or Bevel to see a preview. Select an option to apply the effect.
  3. Format Data Points:
    • Right-click on a data point and choose Format Data Series to customize marker styles, sizes, and colors.

3. Final Adjustments

  • Add chart elements like titles, axis labels, or legends by clicking the + button next to the chart or using the Chart Elements menu in the Chart Design tab.
  • Adjust the chart size and position by dragging the corners of the chart box.
