How to Flip a Picture in Microsoft Word
Although Microsoft Word is not primarily designed for photo editing, it does offer basic features like image mirroring. If you need to flip a picture in Word, here’s how you can do it.
These steps are applicable to recent versions of Microsoft Word, including Office Online and Microsoft 365.
To flip a picture in Word, start by opening the document that contains the image you want to modify. This can be any inserted image, as well as shapes or other drawings within your document.
To flip the image, first select it by clicking on it. Then, go to the “Format” tab in the ribbon under the “Picture Tools” section (or “Drawing Tools” for shapes and other objects).
Next, click the “Rotate Objects” icon in the “Arrange” section. The icon size may vary based on your screen resolution and the size of the Word window.
A drop-down menu will appear with several options for rotating and flipping your image.
To flip the image upside down, select “Flip Vertical.” If you wish to mirror the image horizontally, choose the “Flip Horizontal” option.
The image effect you selected will be applied to your image automatically.
You can reposition the image or make additional adjustments using the “Picture Tools” (or “Drawing Tools”) menu. For example, Microsoft Word offers a built-in tool to remove an image’s background.
If you wish to reverse a flip, select the “Undo” icon in the top-left corner or press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac). Alternatively, repeat the flip action (e.g., applying “Flip Vertical” twice) to return the image to its original orientation.
