Using Microsoft Word Learning Tools
Microsoft Word’s Learning Tools, available to Office 365 subscribers, are designed to improve reading comprehension and fluency. Accessing Learning Tools
- Open Word and go to the View tab.
- Select Learning Tools to open its dedicated tab with six main features.
Learning Tools Features
1. Column Width
Adjusts the number of words per line to reduce visual overwhelm. Choose from four levels of text width to suit your comfort.
2. Page Color
Changes the background color to reduce eye strain and improve text visibility. Preview colors live by hovering over options.
3. Line Focus
Highlights one, three, or five lines of text at a time to improve focus. Use the up/down arrows to navigate through the document.
4. Text Spacing
Adds extra space between characters, words, and lines, aiding fluency for new readers.
5. Syllables
Breaks words into syllables to assist with pronunciation and word recognition.
6. Read Aloud
Reads text aloud while highlighting words in real-time. You can control playback speed and choose different voices.
Keyboard Shortcuts for Read Aloud:
- Start/Exit: Ctrl+Alt+Space
- Play/Pause: Ctrl+Space
- Speed Up: Alt+Right
- Slow Down: Alt+Left
- Next Paragraph: Ctrl+Right
- Previous Paragraph: Ctrl+Left
