Inserting GIFs into Word
Adding an animated GIF to a Word document can help convey a message, demonstrate an activity, grab attention, or add humor. Here’s how to do it in Microsoft Word.
You can insert animated GIFs saved on your computer just like you would insert a picture or other object. However, this feature works only in Microsoft Word for Windows 10. Mac users can insert GIFs, but they won’t be animated.
Steps to Insert a GIF:
- Open Word and position the cursor where you want the GIF.
- Go to the Insert tab and, in the Illustrations group, click “Pictures.”
- Select “This Device” from the drop-down menu.
File Explorer will open. Locate and select the GIF you want to insert. Click “Insert.”
The GIF will now appear in your Word document with a pause icon in the bottom-left corner. Click it to pause the animation.
You’ll also see automatically generated alt text below the GIF. Since it may not always be accurate, consider adding a descriptive alt text to improve accessibility. To edit it, simply click the text at the bottom of the GIF.
Alternatively, right-click the GIF and then select “Edit Alt Text” from the context menu.
The Alt Text pane will appear to the right of the window. Type the desired alt text in the text box.
Now, you’ve successfully inserted a GIF into your Word document and made it accessible to all.
