How to Restore Default User Options and Registry Settings in Word
If Microsoft Word is behaving erratically, resetting the program’s settings may resolve the issue. While Word doesn’t have a dedicated “reset” button to restore its default user options and registry settings, there are a couple of straightforward methods available.
Using Microsoft’s Easy Fix Wizard
The simplest way to reset Word is by using Microsoft’s Easy Fix Wizard, which automatically resets Word’s user options and registry settings. To access the Wizard, navigate to the “Here’s an Easy Fix” section on Microsoft’s Troubleshooting page, and select “Download.” Once the download is complete, open the application.
Before running the Wizard, ensure all Office applications are closed. The Easy Fix window will appear with basic information. Click “Next” and let the tool run its troubleshooting process. When the process finishes, click “Close.” The user options and registry settings will be reset, and upon reopening Word, you’ll be prompted to complete the initial setup process.
Resetting via the Registry Editor
Alternatively, you can manually reset the user options and settings in Word using the Registry Editor.
Important Warning: The Registry Editor is a powerful tool, and improper use can cause your system to become unstable or inoperable. While this method is straightforward, if you are unfamiliar with the Registry Editor, it’s advisable to review how to use it and back up your Registry (and your computer) before making any changes.
To proceed, press Windows Key + R to open the “Run” window. Type Regedt32.exe
and click “OK” to launch the Registry Editor. Navigate to the following file path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\
(Note: The “16.0” part may vary depending on your version of Office; for Office 2013, it will be “15.0.”)
Once at the correct location, select the key you wish to delete. Right-click and choose Edit > Delete. You’ll be prompted to confirm the deletion—click “Yes.” The key will be removed, resetting Word’s settings.
