How to Print on Both Sides of a Page in Microsoft Word

If you need to print a two-sided booklet or want to save paper, Microsoft Word makes it easy to print double-sided on both Windows and Mac, whether or not you have a duplex printer.

If your printer supports duplex printing, you can print on both sides quickly. If you don’t have a duplex printer, you’ll need to manually flip the paper. Here’s how to do both options in Word on Windows.

Print Double-Sided in Word

Printing double-sided in Word is simple on Windows if your printer supports duplex printing. If not, you can use the manual method.

Print With a Duplex Printer

1. Open your Word document and go to the File tab.
2. Choose Print.
3. If needed, select your printer at the top.
4. Under Settings, open the second drop-down menu and select one of the “Print on Both Sides” options. The first option flips pages on the long edge, and the second flips pages on the short edge.

Make any other adjustments you need and click Print when you’re ready.

If you don’t see the “Print on Both Sides” options, it means your printer doesn’t support duplex printing. In that case, follow the steps below to manually print double-sided.

Print Double-Sided Manually

If your printer can only print on one side, you can print the first set of pages, flip the paper over, and then print the rest. Word on Windows offers two ways to do this.

With your Word document open, go to the File tab and select Print.

In the second drop-down menu under Settings, choose Manually Print on Both Sides. This option will prompt you when it’s time to flip the pages over in your printer.

Alternatively, use the first drop-down box under Settings and pick either “Only Print Odd Pages” or “Only Print Even Pages.” Make the other adjustments needed and click “Print.”

Once the first set of pages finishes printing, flip the pages over and reinsert them into the printer. Depending on your printer, you may also need to rotate the pages. Check your printer’s manual for specific instructions.

Return to your Word document and select the other set (odd or even) in the first drop-down menu under Settings, then continue printing.
