How to Draw a Circle Around Text in Microsoft Word

There are many ways to make text stand out in your document, like using bold, italics, or highlighting. Another option is to circle the text, and we’ll show you how to do that in Microsoft Word.

You might want to circle text to highlight it or just to improve the look of your document. Whatever your reason, circling text in Word is easy and only takes a few simple steps.

Add a Shape to the Document

  1. Open your Word document and go to the Insert tab.
  2. Click Shapes to see the available options.

The closest shape to a circle is the oval, which works well for circling text. Choose that option in the Basic Shapes section.

Your cursor will change to a plus sign. Click and drag to draw the oval around your text. You can adjust the size to fit the text you want to circle, but don’t worry— you can resize the shape later if needed.

Now that you’ve drawn your circle, you may need to adjust it so that the text is properly visible. You can also customize the line size or color if needed.

Format the Circle Around the Text

To customize your circle, use the Shape Format tab. If the shape has a fill color that you want to remove, select the shape and choose No Fill from the Shape Fill drop-down menu on the Shape Format tab.

This will let you place the circle over the text while only showing the outline of the shape.

To adjust the line of the circle, click the Shape Outline drop-down arrow. From there, you can change the line color, thickness, and style.
