How to Create Business Cards Using Microsoft Word
If you need to create business cards but don’t have experience with advanced design tools like InDesign or Photoshop, you can easily use Microsoft Word’s business card templates. And if none of the templates suit your style, you can also design your cards from scratch.
What Should Business Cards Include?
Before we start designing, it’s helpful to know what information your business cards should have. While the details may vary depending on your industry, here are some key things to consider adding:
- Your first and last name
- The company name
- The company logo
- A tagline or slogan
- Your job title
- Your business address
- A contact number and email address
- Your website URL and social media handles
- A QR code linking to any of the above
- Your photo (optional)
How to Design Business Cards Using Word’s Templates
Now that you know what to include, it’s time to choose a business card design. It’s helpful to decide on the details you want beforehand since different templates offer different fields.
- Open Microsoft Word and click “New” from the left-hand menu.
Scroll through the business card template options and click on a design that fits your needs. A window will pop up showing a preview and description of the template. If you like the design, click “Create.” For example, I’ve selected the Hexagon template.
Your business cards will now appear in a new Word document. To edit the text, click on the text fields and enter your information. For images, right-click on the image, select “Change Picture”, and choose a source (such as “This Device”).
Conveniently, any changes you make to the first business card will automatically apply to the rest, so you won’t need to duplicate the information.
Once you’ve proofread your design, press Ctrl+P to print. If your printer supports it, consider using thicker or glossy paper for a more professional finish.
How to Design Business Cards from Scratch
If you didn’t find a template you like, you can create your own design by adding a table, images, and formatting text.
Start by opening a blank Word document, then click “Table” in the Insert tab on the ribbon.
From the drop-down menu that appears, create a table with two columns and four rows by hovering over and selecting the appropriate block. You can add more rows if you’d like, but this size will fit well on a single page.
Before designing your business cards in the table, you’ll need to adjust a few settings. Hover your cursor over any part of the table and right-click on the crosshairs in the top-left corner. Then, select “Table Properties.”
In the Table tab of the Table Properties dialog box, select “Center” in the Alignment section. This helps keep your cards nice and even on the page.
Next, go to the Row tab in the Table Properties window. Check the “Specify Height” box, set the height to 2 inches (or 5.08 cm, depending on your settings), and choose “Exactly” from the Row Height Is drop-down menu.
Finally, go to the Column tab. Check the “Preferred Width” box, and set the width to 3 inches (or 7.62 cm, depending on your settings). Once you’ve done that, click “OK.”
Your table will now resize to match the standard business card dimensions. If you need to adjust the cell height again, simply repeat the process—right-click the crosshairs, select “Table Properties,” and modify the settings in the Row tab.
Now you’re ready to start adding your information and design to the first cell. Use the Home tab to format text, the Insert tab to add images and text boxes, and the Table Design tab to style the table
