How to Create a Flowchart in Word

Microsoft Word offers built-in tools like shapes and SmartArt for designing and arranging flowcharts. Follow these steps to create flowcharts that are both functional and visually appealing.

Using Shapes to Create a Flowchart

  1. Enable Gridlines
    • Go to the View tab and check Gridlines to help align and size your flowchart elements.
  2. Insert Shapes
    • Navigate to the Insert tab and click Shapes.
    • Choose shapes from the Flowchart group (e.g., rectangle for processes, diamond for decisions, and oval for start/end points).
    • Click and drag to draw your shape. Add text by selecting the shape and typing directly inside it.
  3. Connect Shapes
    • Return to the Shapes menu and select a connector from the Lines group.
    • Click on the first shape’s center handle, drag to the second shape’s center handle, and release.
  4. Format Shapes and Connectors
    • Use the Format tab to customize colors, lines, and other design elements.
    • Right-click formatted shapes or lines and select Set as Default to apply consistent styling throughout your chart.

Using SmartArt to Create a Flowchart

  1. Insert SmartArt
    • Go to the Insert tab and click SmartArt.
    • In the dialog box, select the Process category, choose a flowchart style (e.g., “Picture Accent Process”), and click OK.
  2. Customize SmartArt
    • Add text or images by selecting placeholders.
    • Remove unnecessary elements by selecting them and pressing Delete.
    • Copy objects if additional items are needed.
