Creating and Working with Multilevel Lists in Word
								Microsoft Word makes it simple to create and customize multilevel lists with options for bullets, numbers, or letters. Here’s a guide to help you master multilevel lists.
How to Create a Multilevel List
- Prepare Your Text:
- Type out your list, placing each item on a separate line.
 
 - Apply Multilevel Formatting:
- Select the list items.
 - Go to the Home tab on the Ribbon and click the Multilevel List button.
 - Choose a built-in style from the dropdown menu.
 
 
Demoting and Promoting Lines
Multilevel lists allow you to organize items hierarchically by promoting or demoting lines.
- Demote (Indent):
- Place the cursor at the start of the line and press Tab.
 - Press Tab multiple times to increase the indent level further.
 
 - Promote (Outdent):
- Place the cursor at the start of the line and press Shift + Tab.
 
 - Multiple Lines:
- Select multiple lines and press Tab or Shift + Tab to change their levels collectively.
 
 
Using the Menu to Pick a Specific List Level
If you prefer precise control:
- Place the cursor on the line you want to modify (or select multiple lines).
 - Open the Multilevel List dropdown.
 - Hover over Change List Level and select the desired level.
 
Changing the List Type
You can easily switch between list types (e.g., numbers to bullets):
- Place your cursor anywhere in the list.
 - Open the Multilevel List dropdown.
 - Select a new style from the menu, and the entire list will update.
 
Customizing Your Multilevel List
- Open Customization Options:
- Click the Multilevel List button and choose Define New Multilevel List.
 
 - Customize Levels:
- Select the level to modify and adjust its:
- Number Style: Choose from numbers, bullets, or custom symbols.
 - Starting Number: Specify where numbering begins.
 - Indentation: Adjust alignment and spacing.
 - Font: Change the appearance of the numbers or bullets.
 
 - Use the More button for additional options like linking levels to specific styles.
 
 - Select the level to modify and adjust its:
 - Repeat for Each Level:
- Modify each level of the list as needed.
 
 
Turning Your Multilevel List into a Reusable Style
- Define a New Style:
- Open the Multilevel List dropdown and select Define New List Style.
 
 - Name Your Style:
- Give it a descriptive name.
 
 - Apply the Style:
- Decide if the style should apply only to the current document or be available in new documents based on the current template.
 
 - Save the Style:
- Click OK to make it available for future use.
