Creating and Updating a Table of Figures in Microsoft Word
A table of figures is a list of captions from figures, images, or tables in your document, organized by page number. It functions like a table of contents but specifically for captioned elements.
Inserting a Table of Figures
A table of figures helps readers quickly locate specific content, especially in longer documents with many visual elements. To insert one:
- Ensure all figures, images, and tables have captions added (different from alternative text).
- Place your cursor where you want the table.
- Go to the References tab and select Insert Table of Figures.
- In the dialog box, customize the format and options, then click OK.
The table of figures will appear in your document, formatted as specified.
Updating a Table of Figures
If you edit the document, captioned items may shift. Update the table to reflect these changes:
- Select the table of figures.
- Go to References > Update Table or press F9.
- In the dialog box, choose to update either the entire table or just page numbers.
- Click OK to apply the changes.
Your table of figures will now display the latest information.
