Creating a Striped Table in Word

Word 2021 - GGKEYS

Shaded bands (also called “striped rows”) enhance readability and improve the visual appeal of tables. Here’s a step-by-step guide to adding shaded bands in both Excel and Word:

In Excel: Adding Shaded Bands

  1. Create or Select Your Table
    • Highlight the data range you want to format as a table.
    • Go to the Insert tab and select Table (or press Ctrl+T).
    • In the “Create Table” dialog box, ensure the range is correct and check “My table has headers” if applicable. Click OK.
  2. Apply Banding
    • Once the table is created, Excel automatically applies banding with a default table style.
    • To customize the banding:
      • Go to the Table Design tab (appears when the table is selected).
      • Check the Banded Rows box under Table Style Options.
      • Click on the Table Styles dropdown to choose a predefined style with the desired colors.
  3. Customize Row Colors (Optional)
    • For custom colors, click New Table Style in the Table Styles dropdown.
    • Name your style, then define the row shading under Banded Rows.
    • Apply the new style to your table.

In Word: Adding Shaded Bands

  1. Insert a Table
    • Go to the Insert tab and click Table.
    • Use the grid to choose the number of columns and rows (e.g., 4×5).
    • For larger tables, select Insert Table… and specify the size and preferences.
  2. Apply Shading to Rows
    • Highlight the second row of your table.
    • Navigate to the Table Design tab.
    • Click Shading and select a color (e.g., light blue).
    • Repeat for each even-numbered row to create the banded effect.
  3. Use Predefined Table Styles
    • Word provides built-in table styles with striping.
    • Highlight the table, then go to Table Design > Table Styles and choose a style with alternating row colors.

Tips for Customization

  • Borders: Use the Borders menu in the Table Design tab to adjust which borders are visible for a cleaner look.
  • Row Heights: To ensure even spacing, adjust row heights by dragging the row boundary or using the Layout tab.
  • Themes: For consistent styling across tables, apply a theme to your document in the Design tab (Word) or Page Layout tab (Excel).
