According to the financial manager at Game Science in Hangzhou, the total development cost of Black Myth: Wukong exceeded 300 million yuan (approximately $42.5 million).
“We estimated that the total development cost of Black Myth: Wukong was more than 300 million yuan. To help the company benefit from tax incentives, the Hangzhou Taxation Bureau established a long-term communication mechanism with us, providing precise guidance on high-tech enterprise declarations and standardized collection of Research & Development expenses.”
This lower cost is primarily due to the fact that game development is significantly cheaper in China compared to the West. Additionally, many Western game companies incur unnecessary expenses, which drives up overall costs, resulting in massive budgets.
For comparison, the infamous Concord, developed by Firewalk Studios and published by Sony, is believed to have had a budget as high as $400 million. The total budget for Concord remains debated, with conflicting reports, so this figure should be taken with caution. Nonetheless, it highlights the stark contrast between the budgets of these two games.
This again proves that a dedicated team with a clear vision can achieve remarkable results without the need for a massive budget.
