Creating a Family Tree from Scratch in Excel
You can create a fully customizable family tree from scratch to include a specific number of generations.
Excel provides versatile tools and features that make the process both creative and enjoyable.
Start by opening a blank workbook in Excel. Navigate to the Insert tab, click on the Illustrations drop-down arrow, and choose SmartArt.
When the SmartArt Graphic window appears, select Hierarchy from the menu on the left. You’ll then have a variety of organizational chart options to choose from for building your family tree.
Choose the chart you prefer, click OK, and the SmartArt graphic will appear in your sheet. Once it’s inserted, you can use the SmartArt Design tab to enhance the tree, add shapes for additional family members, and adjust the colors to your liking.
Select a text box to begin, like the one at the top for your photo and details. Click inside the text box and type in the relevant information.
Alternatively, click the arrow on the left side of the chart to open the text entry box, where you can type in the details.
To add a shape for another family member, select an existing text box and open the “Add Shape” drop-down menu in the ribbon.
From there, you can choose to add the shape after, before, above, or below the selected box. The “Add Assistant” option is also available if you’d like to include multiple marriages.
If you choose the Picture Organizational Chart, you can either select the image placeholder within the text box or in the text entry box on the left. From there, browse for and select your photo to insert it into the chart.
You can also enhance your family tree’s appearance by removing the gridlines or adding a picture background. Excel offers a variety of customization options, so feel free to get creative and make the tree truly your own!
