How to Align Objects and Images Perfectly in Microsoft Word

When creating a document with shapes, images, or other objects, aligning them properly can greatly improve its appearance. Fortunately, Microsoft Word offers tools to help you align your objects easily.

By turning on Alignment Guides or Gridlines, you can neatly arrange your items, giving your document a more organized and professional look. You can also customize these settings to suit your preferences.

How to Enable and Use Alignment Guides

Alignment Guides show lines as you move objects around the page, making it easy to line them up with the page margins (top, bottom, left, and right). To turn on the alignment guides:

  1. Go to the Layout tab.
  2. In the Arrange section of the ribbon, click the Align drop-down arrow.
  3. Select Alignment Guides to check the box and enable the feature.

Now, as you drag objects, you’ll see the guides to help you align them perfectly.

Step 1

When you see the object that you’re dragging lined up with the guides, simply release to place it in that spot.

To turn off the guides, simply follow the same steps as above and uncheck the Alignment Guides option to remove the checkmark.

How to Enable and Use Gridlines

Another useful tool for aligning items in your document is Gridlines. They help you move and position objects evenly, ensuring they line up properly with other elements according to the grid. To turn on the gridlines:

  1. Go to the Layout tab.
  2. Click the Align drop-down arrow.
  3. Select View Gridlines to check the box and enable the feature.

With gridlines on, you can easily place your objects in a neat and consistent arrangement.

Step 2

Once enabled, gridlines will appear across each page of your document, helping you align your objects accurately.

To turn off the gridlines, simply follow the same steps as above and uncheck View Gridlines.

How to Customize the Grid Settings

You can adjust the settings for both Alignment Guides and Gridlines to suit your preferences. To customize how they appear and function:

  1. Go to the Layout tab.
  2. Click the Align drop-down menu.
  3. Select Grid Settings to open the customization options.

From here, you can tweak the grid settings to better fit your document layout.

Step 3

When the Grid and Guides box opens, you’ll see the available settings for Alignment Guides at the top. To display the guides, check the box at the top. You can also choose to enable additional guides by checking the boxes beneath it for page, margin, and paragraph guides.

Step 4

To align your object with other objects, check the box below Object Snapping.

To adjust the size of the gridlines, use the Horizontal and Vertical Spacing boxes to select your desired grid size.

Step 5

To change the origin of the grid, uncheck the Use Margins box and enter your desired measurements in the Horizontal Origin and Vertical Origin boxes.

Step 6

To turn on gridlines, check the box next to Show Grid for Display Gridlines on Screen. You can then adjust the settings for Vertical and Horizontal placement. If you want objects to snap to the grid even when gridlines aren’t visible, check the box at the bottom.

Step 7

When you’re done with the Grid Settings, click OK to save your changes. If you want these settings to apply to all your Word documents, select Set As Default.

With these two handy features, you’ll be able to align items perfectly in your next Word document. For more tips, check out how to overlay images in Word.
