Disabling Automatic Hyperlinks in Word
By default, Word automatically converts web addresses (URLs) into hyperlinks as you type them. This can be convenient in many cases, but it can be distracting in certain situations, like when creating bibliographies or references. If you’d rather control when hyperlinks are created, here’s how to turn off this feature.
Steps to Turn Off Automatic Hyperlinks
- Open the File Menu:
Start by opening your Word document. Click on the File tab in the ribbon. - Go to Word Options:
In the sidebar that appears, click Options to open the Word Options window. - Access the Proofing Settings:
In the Word Options window, select the Proofing category from the menu on the left. - Open AutoCorrect Options:
On the right side, find the AutoCorrect Options section and click the AutoCorrect Options button. - Disable Hyperlinks in AutoFormat:
In the AutoCorrect window that opens, switch to the AutoFormat As You Type tab.- Look for the option labeled Internet and network paths with hyperlinks under the “Replace As You Type” section.
- Uncheck this box to stop Word from automatically converting web addresses into hyperlinks.
- Save Your Changes:
Click OK to close the AutoCorrect window, then click OK again to close the Word Options window and save your settings.
Now, Word will no longer automatically create hyperlinks when you type or paste web addresses. You can still manually insert hyperlinks wherever you need them by using the Insert tab.
