How to Scan a Microsoft Word Document for Plagiarism

Word 2021 - GGKEYS

Plagiarism is a serious ethical violation, but unfortunately, it still occurs. If you’ve received a Word document that is supposed to be original content, you can run it through a plagiarism checker to verify its authenticity. Below are some options to help you with this task.

Use an Add-in

One effective way to check for plagiarism in Word documents is by using the Copyleaks add-in. This tool scans your document for similarities with other online content and provides a comprehensive report. It’s compatible with Word 2016 or later on both PC and Mac.

While Copyleaks offers a “free” plan, this is somewhat misleading. The free plan provides 10 credits per month, with each credit allowing you to scan 250 words. For example, if your document is 2,500 words long, you will need 10 credits to scan the entire text. Copyleaks offers three different pricing plans: free, subscription, and prepaid, each with varying benefits.

Steps to Install and Use Copyleaks:

  1. Open Microsoft Word and go to the “Insert” tab.
  2. In the “Add-ins” group, click “Get Add-ins.” This opens the Office Add-Ins window.
  3. In the search bar, type “Copyleaks” and select the “Copyleaks Plagiarism Checker” from the results.
  4. Click “Add” to install the add-in. Once installed, a “Copyleaks.com” group will appear in the “References” tab.
  5. Select “Scan” to open the Copyleaks Plagiarism Checker pane on the right.
  6. Create an account using your email, and verify it via the email you receive.
  7. You’ll be given 10 free credits to use. To purchase additional credits, click “Get Credits.”
  8. To begin scanning, click “Scan” and wait for the results to appear.

Once the scan is complete, select “Launch Report” to view a detailed plagiarism report in your browser. This will include the number of words checked, the percentage of similar words found, and a breakdown of which parts of the document are duplicated, highlighted in different colors based on similarity.

Use an Online Plagiarism Checker

If you prefer not to install an add-in, there are several online plagiarism checkers you can use. One popular option is SmallSEOTools, which offers a free plagiarism detection service with a word limit of 1,000 words per search.

Steps to Use SmallSEOTools:

  1. Visit the SmallSEOTools plagiarism checker page.
  2. Copy and paste your text into the provided text box, or upload your document by clicking the “Upload a Document” link.
  3. Select the document you want to upload and click “Open.”
  4. Click “Check Plagiarism” to begin the scan.
  5. Once completed, the tool provides a sentence-by-sentence breakdown, marking sentences as “Unique” or “Plagiarized” accordingly.
  6. You can also click the “Matched Sources” tab to view the original sources of any copied content.

These are two straightforward ways to ensure the originality of the content in a Microsoft Word document.
