How to Change Page Margins in Word
Word documents come with one-inch margins by default, but you can easily adjust the margins to better suit your needs. You can either choose from predefined margin options or specify your own exact measurements. Here’s how to do it.
Change Page Margins in Word
To adjust the margins, open Word and go to the “Layout” tab. In the “Page Setup” group, select “Margins.” A drop-down menu will appear with several predefined margin settings. Choose the one that best fits your needs, and your page margins will update accordingly.
If none of the predefined options meet your requirements, you can set custom margins. From the same drop-down menu, select “Custom Margins” at the bottom. The “Page Setup” window will open, and by default, you will be in the “Margins” tab. Here, you can manually adjust the top, bottom, left, and right margins by using the up and down arrows next to each option. Each click changes the margin by 0.1 inch. You can also adjust the gutter margin, which is typically used in two-page layouts to accommodate binding.
After adjusting the margins to your preference, click “OK” to apply the changes.
Set a Custom Margin as the Default
If you frequently use the same custom margins, you can set them as your default so that they automatically apply to every new document you create. To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to the “Layout” tab and click “Margins” in the “Page Setup” group.
- Select “Custom Margins” from the drop-down menu.
- In the “Page Setup” window, adjust your margins as needed.
- Click “Set As Default” in the lower-left corner.
- A confirmation box will appear, notifying you that this change will affect all new documents based on the NORMAL template. Click “Yes.”
Now, every time you open Word, the document will automatically use your custom margin settings.
