How to Create Fractions in Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word offers multiple ways to write fractions, whether you’re working on a school assignment, financial report, or another document. You can use AutoCorrect for common fractions, insert symbols, or use the Equation tool for custom numerators and denominators. Here’s how to do it.
Automatically Format Fractions with AutoCorrect
Microsoft Word can automatically convert common fractions like 1/2 or 1/4 into fraction symbols. Once AutoCorrect is enabled, just type the fraction using numbers and a forward slash, and Word will convert it for you.
- Open Word and go to File > Options.
- Select Proofing from the left menu.
- Click AutoCorrect Options on the right.
Select the AutoFormat as You Type tab and check the box for Fractions with Fraction Character. You can also see an example of how the transformation will look.
Insert Fractions Using Symbols
If you need less common fractions like 2/3 or 3/5, Word’s AutoCorrect feature won’t convert them automatically. Instead, you can insert them using the symbol options in Word.
- Open the Symbols drop-down menu.
- Select More Symbols to access a broader range of fraction symbols.
Double-click the fraction or select it and click “Insert” to place it in your document. Click “Close” to close the Symbol window when you finish.
Create a Fraction Using the Equation Tool
If AutoCorrect or the Symbols menu doesn’t have the fraction you need, you can use Word’s Equation tool to create a custom fraction.
Head to the Insert tab and select “Equation” in the Symbols section of the ribbon. Either click the button itself or choose “Insert New Equation” in the drop-down menu.
Using the Equation Editor for Fractions
Once the equation editor appears in your document, click on the Equation tab that appears in the ribbon. Open the Fraction drop-down menu and choose one of the four available fraction styles at the top.
Once you’ve chosen a fraction style, it will appear in the equation editor. Click each box to type in your numerator and denominator. Use the arrow on the right side of the equation editor to adjust the alignment or position the fraction inline with your text.
With these three methods—AutoCorrect, Symbols, and the Equation tool—you can easily insert fractions in Microsoft Word. For additional tips, check out how to format superscript or subscript text.
