Adding Blur or Transparency to Images in Word

Word 2021 - GGKEYS

When overlaying text on a graphic in Microsoft Word, it’s essential to ensure that the text remains legible while preserving the visual impact of the image. Adjusting the image’s blur or transparency can strike this balance, allowing readers to see the image while ensuring the text stands out.

Fortunately, Microsoft Word provides built-in tools to help you modify images with ease. By applying a few simple adjustments, you can give your images a more subtle appearance, whether by softening them with a blur effect or increasing their transparency.

How to Add Blur to an Image in Word

Blurring an image in Word softens its details, making it less visually dominant. Follow these steps to adjust the blur:

  1. Select the Image and Access the Format Options:
    • Right-click the image, choose Format Picture, and select the Picture icon in the sidebar.
    • Alternatively, go to the Picture Format tab, click Corrections, and select Picture Corrections Options.
  2. Adjust the Sharpness Setting:
    • In the Format Picture sidebar, expand the Picture Corrections section.
    • Under Sharpen/Soften, use the Sharpness slider or enter a specific percentage in the input box to reduce the sharpness.
    • The changes will apply immediately, allowing you to fine-tune the effect as needed.
  3. Revert to the Original Image (if needed):
    • Click Reset at the bottom of the Picture Corrections section to restore the image to its original state.

How to Adjust Image Transparency in Word

If increasing transparency is a better fit for your document, Word offers a similar process:

  1. Open the Transparency Options:
    • Access the Format Picture sidebar as described above, and expand the Picture Transparency section.
  2. Apply a Transparency Effect:
    • Use the Presets menu for quick adjustments, ranging from 0% (fully opaque) to 95% (highly transparent).
    • For more precise control, adjust the transparency using the slider or enter a specific percentage in the input box.
  3. View Changes in Real-Time:
    • As you adjust the transparency, the changes will update instantly, letting you refine the effect to your liking.
  4. Revert Transparency Adjustments:
    • To restore full opacity, move the slider to 0% or select the corresponding preset.
