How to Flip a Picture in Microsoft Word

Word 2021 - GGKEYS

Although Microsoft Word is not primarily a photo editing tool, it still offers basic features like image mirroring. Therefore, if you need to flip a picture in Word, follow these simple steps.

These steps apply to recent versions of Microsoft Word, including Office Online and Microsoft 365.

To start, open the document that contains the image you want to modify. You can flip any inserted image, shape, or drawing within your document.

First, click on the image to select it. Next, go to the Format tab in the ribbon under the Picture Tools section (or Drawing Tools for shapes and other objects).

Then, locate the Rotate Objects icon in the Arrange section and click on it. The icon size may change depending on your screen resolution and Word window size.

Step 1

A drop-down menu will appear with several options for rotating and flipping your image.

To flip the image upside down, select “Flip Vertical.” If you wish to mirror the image horizontally, choose the “Flip Horizontal” option.

Step 2

The image effect you selected will automatically apply to your image.
Additionally, you can reposition the image or make further adjustments using the “Picture Tools” (or “Drawing Tools”) menu. For instance, Microsoft Word provides a built-in tool to remove an image’s background.

If you’d like to reverse the flip, select the “Undo” icon in the top-left corner or press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac). Alternatively, you can repeat the flip action (e.g., applying “Flip Vertical” twice) to return the image to its original orientation.
