Ghost of Tsushima Officially Gets a Follow-Up Titled Ghost of Yotei
Ghost of Tsushima 2 has been confirmed as Ghost of Yotei during the State of Play. This was confirmed during Sony’s State of Play presentation today. The game is expected to be released sometime in 2025.
This was the most important announcement to close out the September State of Play presentation and one of the biggest surprises. The development team at Sucker Punch revealed a significant amount of footage, including some amazing cinematic scenes. As you can guess from the title, the game will not focus on Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima but on a brand new protagonist, Atsushi. Sucker Punch didn’t reveal too much during the presentation, but we now have more information thanks to a PlayStation Blog post shortly afterward. According to the post, the creators wanted to retain the key elements of Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in feudal Japan, the freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world.
“We wanted to continue innovating. To create something fresh yet familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and Tsushima to focus on the idea of ghosts themselves,” the post continues. “At Sucker Punch, we love origin stories and wanted to explore what it means for a new hero to don a ghost mask and uncover new legends. This gives us a new protagonist, a new storyline, and a new region of Japan to explore: Ghost of Yotei.
The story is set in the area around Mount Yōtei in 1603, 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch states that this is ‘very different from the organized samurai clans that lived on Tsushima, providing a backdrop for an original story that we can’t wait to tell.’
Uniquely inspired by the works of director Akira Kurosawa (the game even includes a ‘Kurosawa Mode’) and other samurai films, Ghost of Tsushima follows a samurai on a mission to defend Tsushima during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. The game was released for PlayStation 4 in July 2020, and the multiplayer mode Ghost of Tsushima: Legends was released in October of the same year. A Director’s Cut was released for PS4 and PS5 in 2021, and a PC port finally came out last year.
