Formatting Superscript or Subscript in Word & PowerPoint

Superscript and subscript formatting is often required for chemical formulas, mathematical expressions, or footnotes. Here’s how to use these features in Word and PowerPoint.

Formatting Superscript or Subscript Text

  1. Using the Font Dialog
    • Select the text you want to format.
    • Click the Font Dialog Box Launcher (small icon in the bottom-right corner of the Font group on the ribbon).
    • In the Effects section, check Superscript or Subscript as needed. A preview of the formatted text appears in the window.
    • Click OK to apply.
    • To undo the effect, select the text and press Ctrl+Spacebar to remove formatting.
  2. Keyboard Shortcuts
    • Superscript: Select the text and press Ctrl+Shift+Plus sign (+).
    • Subscript: Select the text and press Ctrl+=.

Inserting Superscript or Subscript Symbols

  1. Accessing Symbols
    • Go to the Insert tab and click Symbol.
    • Select More Symbols from the drop-down menu.
  2. Choosing Superscript or Subscript
    • In the Symbol window, use the Subset dropdown menu to choose Superscripts and Subscripts.
    • Select your desired symbol and click Insert.

Your symbol will now appear in your document or presentation.
