Some of the best quests in The Witcher 3—or in many RPGs—are the ones that embrace the weird and serve as bizarre interludes in what can otherwise be a serious story. One of the latest quest mods for CD Projekt’s masterpiece seems to take that very approach.
We’ve already covered some interesting entries in CD Projekt’s recent REDkit modding competition, where participants were tasked with creating two to three mission-long questlines. Some modders took players on hot air balloon adventures, while others journeyed to Cintra. Now that the submission deadline has passed (October 14), there are plenty of last-minute entries to explore.
Echoes of Play by Olesnienie is described by the modder as “a surreal journey through two quests,” and after watching the playthrough, I can confirm it’s definitely surreal.
The adventure kicks off with Geralt encountering a large, floating light near Novigrad, which transports him to “worlds where reality blends with illusion.” Without giving away too much in case you want to experience it yourself, the mod features philosophical conversations with a shadowy figure, a Dr. Seuss-style dimension where you play as a child (replacing Young Ciri’s model), and a face-off against Geralt’s evil twin or doppelganger.
n this case, the poor doppelganger seems to come from a slightly low-poly realm where characters don’t quite have fully functioning eyes. The whole experience, which feels inspired by Beyond Hill and Dale… from the Blood and Wine DLC—where you’re whisked away to the Land of Fables—unfolds in a silent movie style, without voice acting. This seems to be a common choice among submissions for this modding contest due to time constraints.
While Echoes of Play has caught my attention, it’s not the only notable last-minute entry. Mods like skydoespoint’s Of Kings and Killers – Quest Expansion, where Gerry faces off against a witcher assassin trained by the Wild Hunt, Oleksandr Shapran’s Beast of the Blood, and The Spider and The Wolf by Dwhyx and Beoronick are also earning praise from players.
